March 5, 2022 - Evan Thomas Creek via Old Baldy Trail, Hwy. 40, Kananaskis - PART II

I shared some pictures from Amanda's hike the other day with Nik and Colin, and they were so pumped about them that we convinced Amanda to escort us back yesterday morning.  Hannah was staying with us for a few days so she joined us as well.  I definitely did not do justice to the hike in the previous post, because it was much more amazing than I had imagined.

Being that it was a Saturday, and the weather was predicted to be very nice, I suggested we get there early.  We met at the Petro-Canada on Hwy. 1 at 7:00, and were at the trail head by 8:00, with only one other car in the parking lot.  We quickly got on the trail and headed out.  It was -15 C and mostly cloudy when we started but would warm up and clear up as we went.

Hiking Along The Creek Bed

The hike was very amazing.  Amanda and I had done the first part of this hike last summer, but had turned back due to a lot of deadfall and lack of defined trail.  In winter it is a whole different ball game.  There is a packed down trail along the creek bed, that makes for very easy walking.  The added bonus is that since you are out of the trees there are constant, beautiful views to enjoy.

As we got further along, the bed tightened into more of a ravine or canyon type of hike, and we started to see some of the frozen waterfalls that this trail is known for.  In addition, there was some fun chain and rope sections to navigate.

Some Spectacular Frozen Falls

After about 1.5 hours we got to our destination.   On our maps this set of falls is shown as "Cascades De Glace".  They were truly unbelievable!!  I have not seen anything like it before, and was so glad Amanda brought us here to experience them.
We broke out some snacks (including the stove and espresso maker 😀), took some pictures, and had a little rest.

Hiding Spot Under The Falls

After having this beautiful spot to ourselves for about 40 minutes, ice climbers and hikers all started showing up, which was our cue to start the trip back.  There were too many groups to count coming in as we made our way back, and by the time we got back to the parking lot it was overflowing out to the road.  Our decision to start early was confirmed.😂
We would highly recommend this as a very memorable winter hike.  Make sure to bring micro-spikes, and plan to start early if you prefer avoiding the crowds.  The elevation gain is minimal so it is also a good option for families (just be careful at the chain and rope sections).
